ETC feature for project managers

Time is an important element in about all projects. Therefore, you need a tool that can help you keep track of time, deadlines and progress. TimeLog presents the new feature: ETC - Estimate To Complete.

ETC is known by most project managers as an important parameter to measure the temporal progress on a project, and as an important method to estimate remaining time on it, both on task and project level. ETC stands for Estimate To Complete, and is a new function in TimeLog Project, where project team members can enter how much time that is expected to complete the tasks they are allocated to.

Find discrepancies and keep up with deadlines

Each week, the project manager updates the project’s time budget with the employee’s (new) estimates and this way it's visible if the project follows the timelines and budget. This makes it easy to find potential discrepancies and adjust in time to keep timelines and budgets. The result is better compliance with timelines and a quick reaction at project manager level if delays are identified.

Effective estimation that ends with…

The ETC-function has many approaches in TimeLog Project. From the first estimation of the tasks to time used for follow up, and a project log of the employee’s time estimates. In short, ETC can be used even before the project starts, and to when the last allocation on the project is finished. In the following, we present a few scenarios in order to show the advantages of the ETC-function:

Scenario 1: Making a quote

When making a quote for external assignments, you can use the ETC-function in TimeLog Project to plan the project and give a pre-estimate of the time consumption. The project manager can send out an ETC inquiry to all employees to get a realistic picture of the actual time consumption on the task. This leads to an improvement in project planning and an ability to create projects that actually yield a profit. This makes both the customer and management happy.

Scenario 2: Strict deadlines and more projects at the same time

When you have bigger projects running at the same time, the ETC-function can be an indicator of where the project is headed and how the total time consumed (EAC - Estimate At Completion) effects the other projects in the organization. That is especially so if the timeplan of the project is moved based on the employees’ estimates. An employee can have spent 10 hours of a budget of 10, but with a progress matching 5 hours, and therefore there is a need for further 15 hours for completing the task. The total time consumption for the task/allocation will then be 25 hours.

Scenario 3: Log of estimates as dialogue and development tool

If an employee several times marks a task with a high uncertainty, and the time consumption is exceeded, the log of the employee’s estimates is a good tool for dialogue. Maybe the task's descriptions should be improved or maybe the task's scope has changed several times so there is a need for a pre-project before the actual task can be started. The log of the employee’s estimates can then be a dialogue tool and in the long run a project development tool for both project managers and employees.

In other words, you can use ETC for whatever you want and at the same time get an overview of and keep your projects on track.
